When Should You Go to the ER vs. a Clinic?

When you or a loved one isn’t feeling well, one of the first questions you may ask is: Do I need the emergency room, or can this wait for a clinic visit?

Knowing where to go can save you time, money, and — in serious situations — could even save a life.

Here’s a simple guide to help you decide.

Go to the Emergency Room If You Are Experiencing:

If symptoms are severe, sudden, or getting worse quickly, it’s safer to seek emergency care right away.

Visit a Clinic for:

Clinic visits are often faster and more cost-effective for these types of concerns.

Still Not Sure?

If you’re unsure, ask yourself:

  1. Is this condition life-threatening?
  2. Is the pain severe or worsening rapidly?
  3. Would waiting make the condition significantly worse?

If the answer is yes, go to the ER.

When in doubt, it’s always better to err on the side of caution — especially with chest pain, breathing issues, or stroke symptoms.
